Extremadura, a destination to research some of the most important planet's challenges

The Spanish region has great potential in sustainability from the use of its natural and energy resources, its crops, and the by-products and waste from the agri-food industry. 

It is a region that provides added value and wealth in terms of bioinnovation, and a territory that is presented as the ideal scenario for research, technological development and innovation, and to show the way towards new biotechnological processes that contribute to the generation of wealth in the territory.

Extremadura’s science, technology and innovation system is supported by an ecosystem of research and knowledge centers, universities, associations and business clusters, capable of involving society, business and public administration in the development and growth of the region.

The Spanish region has great potential in sustainability from the use of its natural and energy resources, its crops, and the by-products and waste from the agri-food industry. 

It is a region that provides added value and wealth in terms of bioinnovation, and a territory that is presented as the ideal scenario for research, technological development and innovation, and to show the way towards new biotechnological processes that contribute to the generation of wealth in the territory.

Because Extremadura enjoys an economic, geographical and scientific-technological context that is highly favourable to the current global trends in bioeconomy and green innovation.

The specific characteristics of the territory must also be taken into account: 30% of Extremadura´s territory is composed of nature reserves and protected areas, and contains 25% of water reservoir of Spain. In terms of energy, Extremadura generates 9.7% of the electricity and only consumes 1.7%, in addition to being a leading region in Spain in solar energy production.  

It also has an extensive historical and cultural heritage, with up to 3 sites considered World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
